#fridayfootprints – Friday 22nd April 2022

Dejected soles with scuppered dreams

Their weary tread

And mourning souls

And tears enough to fill a stream!

No sooner has one journey ended than another begins. A road of affirmation and confirmation is bound into our encounters with the Risen Lord.

Yet we are reminded of just how shallow our knowledge and grasp of the miracle of God is.

To have been present on that Emmaus road.

To have spent so much time learning the scriptures and to have witnessed and heard about the life and times of Jesus, but not to fully understand Him. To listen as He explains the scriptures and still not to see His presence; until finally, in one fleeting moment:

…. “He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him.” (Luke 24: 30-3)

When we look at a world torn and bleeding and we cry a desperate scream. If there is only a dark hole in our lives no matter how much we read the scriptures, then we must be drawn to the realisation that He needs to be revealed to us and in us.

“He opened their minds” (Luke 24:45) is the only answer for all of Heaven to be opened before us and for His whispers to engulf our very being.

And so we begin another journey on our Emmaus Road, Open our eyes Lord through the anointing of the Holy Spirit that we may completely fulfil your purpose for us.

Washed clean! The degree as to just how clean, is only fully understood over the days following the resurrection.

The blood shed on the dust of the prison courtyard, on the Via Dolorosa and that dripped onto a patch of earth below the cross on Golgotha, is a brutal graphic reminder of what took place.

Yet, it was what followed that showed us how necessary it was.

Whilst we should react in shame to such a necessity, we are instead blessed by the cleansing action of His empty grave and His continued presence amongst us.

Whilst the angry cries of the men, women and soldiers gathered for His trial and crucifixion should have drowned out everything, it was His whispers through an empty grave that washed over me and His Grace that continues to whisper on every Emmaus road I travel so that I may return from each journey and say, “He Lives”!

“I have seen my Lord and He lives; I know my Lord and I am cleansed.”

Every garden should have an Emmaus Road. A place where you can walk and talk. A place where you can discuss the world with Christ, or rather allow Christ to discuss the world with you. The length of the road is not as important as the width. Your road should be wide enough that the Risen Lord can walk beside you. Close enough; for Him to whisper in your ear! Near enough; that He can support you when you stumble! Having an Emmaus Road gives you a place to walk in prayer and in meditation. Gardening with God gives you the chance to stroll up and down your Emmaus Road as often as you wish and bring you closer to the world God has created for you to garden in.
